An answer the Right have to supply

The Right are out in force, commenting on the Christian Aid report. I wrote this in reply on the Spectator blog this morning: There’s always an excuse for greed. Ample are on display here. There’s always an excuse not to do the right thing. There’s always an excuse to walk on the other side.

    Transfer pricing abuse in Vietnam

Thanhniennews.com has reported: At the [Vietnamese] National Assembly session, the government filed a report saying 2006’s tax revenues collected from foreign-invested businesses were around VND1.97 trillion (US$122 million) less than expected. The government attributed the discrepancy to the slow growth of the automobile and tobacco markets.

    The only hope

    http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/ Blog/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ the-only-hope/

I have the following letter in the London Evening Standard today in response to a comment made yesterday by Anthony Hilton that Gordon Brown has run a dual track economic policy: Gordon Brown has indeed run a dual economy: one for the people and companies of the UK; another for the itinerant people and companies he wanted to attract here.

    Bring It On

    http://hmrcisshite.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ bring-it-on.html

The Tesco vs Guardian dispute, over an article in the Guardian about Tesco's alleged tax avoidance plans, has intensified. Tesco has demanded that the Guardian issue a front page apology. As I have already noted, the story in the first place (although it transpires it was factually incorrect) was theoretically a non story.

    Evacuation (of my mind)

    http://mommyismoody.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ evacuation-of-my-mind/

K, so after I hit publish, there’s a 12 hour window before I pretend to forget about this, agreed? Good. Some of you have been reading a whiles and you know about my history-o-baby-loss. Some even know that Isobel was a baby I was never supposed to be able to carry to term, never mind that she was born on her due date.

    Working with a kinesiophobic person

    http://healthskills.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ working-with-a-kinesiophobic-pe…

One of the biggest challenges when working with someone who is fearful of pain and avoids movement is that although it’s very much like any sort of phobia, it differs on one essential point: people who are spider phobic, socially phobic, fearful of flying or heights or whatever are usually aware at some level that their fear is out of proportion to the ‘real’ risk.

How to pay for the 10p tax rate clawback

    http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/ Blog/ 2008/ 05/ 12/ how-to-pay-for-the-10p-tax-ra…

I have been asked this question yet again today. I have a five step plan: 1) Increase the tax threshold at which tax is paid by £1,000 for everyone. For most people this will reduce their tax liability by £200 - the value that (near enough) the 10p band gave them; 2) Reduce the standard rate band by £1,000.

TUC to be on tax review

    http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/ Blog/ 2008/ 05/ 12/ tuc-to-be-on-tax-review/

It’s been rumoured that the TUC is to be included in Alastair Darling’s review of corporation tax. I can confirm, the rumour is true. That’s one down. Now, how about civil society as well? Share This
