The name 'Barack' was largely unfamiliar to the general American public until July 27, 2004. On that date, Illinois Senate candidate Barack Obama appeared before a national television audience to give the keynote address at the Democratic national convention. Obama introduced himself, told his life story, and urged voters to elect Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry.

On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the the 44th and first African-American president of the United States. Together with his family — wife, Michelle and daughters, Malia and Sasha — President Obama has captured public attention in the United States and the world, perhaps in some ways beyond that of previous presidents.

From an appearance on Ellen and political support posted on Flickr when he was a Presidential candidate, to government topic blogs and an analysis of the first 100 days in office of recent presidents, the blogosphere is alive with interest and commentary on President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and the First Daughters Malia and Sasha.
