Baseball
Baseball is affectionately known in the United States as "America's pastime." Baseball is a "game played with a bat and ball between two teams of nine players each on a large field having four bases that mark the course a runner must take to score." While the definition of the game seems simple, the science behind the sport is much more complex, just like its history.
The game of baseball has been a part of life in the US since at least 1839. The unofficial creator of baseball is Abner Doubleday, but that is disputed by many, with origins that go back to Europe. Regardless of who officially created the game, baseball has helped bring the country together in times of war, including the Civil War, World War II, and the time right after 9/11, offering many moments that are frozen in time for fans, and non-fans, and will be remembered for generations to come.
Some of the greats to play the game of baseball include Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Carl Yastzremski, Cy Young, Greg Maddux, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. The majority of these players are currently enshrined in baseball's Hall of Fame located in Cooperstown, New York.
In the United States, the prominent professional league is Major League Baseball, or MLB for short. Their season runs from April to October, culminating in the World Series.
