In 2002, he announced publicly that he had been diagnosed with symptoms “consistent with Alzheimer’s disease.” Heston was best known for roles he played in some cases half a century ago—Moses in Cecil B.

I couldn’t believe that news of another Ben-Hur adaptation would appear in the trades so soon after the death of Charlton Heston, but this story indeed appeared in Variety yesterday, detailing plans for a $30 million miniseries to be directed by Christian Duguay (The Art of War) and produced by David Wyler, whose father, William Wyler, directed the 1959 classic starring Heston.

Filed under: Cable/Satellite, Reality-FreeThere should be a moratorium on remakes. They rarely work, and in some cases, they are just ill-conceived from step one. That's how I feel about this news: they're remaking Ben-Hur as a television mini-series.

Charlton Heston's recent passing made me reflect on the passing of stardom in Hollywood, replaced by "celebrity." Heston, along with his peers such as John Wayne, James Cagney, Lee Marvin, James Coburn, and Charles Bronson, represented a stature in male (and female stars) that we just don't see anymore.
