RAF Regiment soldier wins Military Cross
http://www.abex.org.uk/ ?p=138An RAF infantryman has been awarded the Military Cross for “outstanding courage” in a fire fight near Basra. Corporal David Hayden, from Spalding in Lincolnshire, received the award for bravery of the “very highest order” during the Iraq incident last August.

“Shocking” corrosion on RAF Hercules aircraft
http://www.abex.org.uk/ ?p=136According to the media a RAF engineer has told an inquest he found “shocking” corrosion on fuel pipe couplings on a Nimrod aircraft shortly before one of them exploded in mid-air. Sergeant Andrew Whitmore revealed he had to saw off one corroded metal cover by hand.

RAF bomber crew re-united in death
http://www.abex.org.uk/ ?p=135Two RAF airmen whose bodies lay buried in the wreckage of a Second World War bomber for 67 years were reunited with their comrades in a war cemetery yesterday. An RAF honour guard stood by as their remains were buried in Bergen, Holland. A four-man crew was aboard the Hampden bomber P1206 of 49 Squadron when it took off from Scampton, Lincs, on Nov 8, 1941.

When I was younger, I built nerdily-painted plastic model aircraft - P-51 Mustangs and Focke Wulf FW-190s - and read W.E. Johns’ Biggles stories, replete with stiff upper lips, engine coolant, and the satisfying comfort that natives knew their place.
