Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States, serving two terms in the oval office from 1993 until 2001. Although the Clinton presidency was marked by economic prosperity, including record low inflation and unemployment as well as an all-too-rare balanced budget, the Clinton years were also plagued by political scandal.
Despite enjoying near record high public approval ratings, scandals like Whitewater and Travelgate, as well as several well publicized extra-marital dalliances left a mark on Clinton, and in 1998 he became the second U.S. president in history to be impeached by congress, as a result of alleged improprieties with intern Monica Lewinsky. Clinton however remained in office to serve out his second term as president when the Senate failed to convict him.
In 2008, Clinton's wife Hillary mounted an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic nomination for President, which she lost to Barack Obama. She later accepted Obama's appointment to become Secretary of State in the Obama administration. Clinton continues to support causes such as AIDS research through the efforts of his Clinton Foundation. In 2009, former President Clinton once again made news by winning the release of American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who had been imprisoned for 140 days in North Korea.
