A medium of communication in which words and static images are paired together, comics began life in the United States as a form of comedic and adventure mass entertainment in newspapers, with a single short strip published daily.

The first "comic book" was published in 1929; from that point onward, comic books would be published in some form continuously as a form of popular entertainment. Leaning heavily toward superheroes and other forms of genre adventure stories, comics sold in the millions per month throughout the middle of the twentieth century.

Today comics have gained acceptance across the spectrum of popular culture, including books published as "graphic novel" collections and original material that occupy space on the shelves of libraries and bookstores alongside prose fiction. Although there remains a misconception that comics are primarily for fans of superhero stories, many are now coming to embrace comic art as its own unique and distinct form of storytelling
