Early last year, I went to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers to hear Sister Sara Butler (that’s her) explain why women cannot be Roman Catholic priests. As I wrote at the time: Butler made the case last night that the all-male priesthood is grounded in Jesus’ choice of 12 male apostles and the Catholic Church’s sustained understanding of what this meant for the priesthood.

Dorothy Day: Writings from Commonweal, edited by Patrick Jordan, is a compilation of her writings for the Catholic publication from 1929 to 1973. A review of the book necessitates a short bio of the author of each of the 38 writings - Ms. Day herself. Dorothy Day was quite simply an amazing Catholic warrior for justice.

Here are some of my shots from the production of Peer Gynt at the Commonweal Theatre Company. The people at that theatre are fun and very professional to work with. I shot five productions for them last year and was hired back again this year. Check out some of last years productions on my site.

My apologies again for what looks like it will be the second straight week of disappointingly light posting. (Well, it’s disappointing for me, anyway.) I’ve been hard at work putting together a draft of my Doublethink article, and there is a deadline on Friday for a departmental essay contest to which I hope to submit a chapter of my dissertation.

by John Borst As frequent visitors to Tomorrow’s Trust will have noticed there is now an advertisement for Commonweal magazine in the left sidebar of the home page. Some may also have noticed that from time to time posts listing the contents of various issues have appeared.

A clip from Stephen Colbert's Democralypse Now has been shared on the Commonweal blog. It offers an entertaining view of the relationship between presidential candidates and controversial preachers.

Author Luke Timothy Johnson has an article on the Commonweal magazine website (“Scripture & Experience,” by Luke Timothy Johnson. Commonweal. Volume CXXXIV, Number 12. June 15, 2007) in which he claims Christianity while ignoring Jesus.

It is now history how, in this semi-comic guise, he stole the liberals’ pants and Pied Pipered just enough of their youth away to form his own movement. And now, of course, he is stuck with them. His wild oats eventually became commitments, as wild oats will, and his disciples expect him to go on leading and inspiring them indefinitely even if he feels like doing something else.
