Cuil
Cuil - which according to the site's "About Us" page is "an old Irish word for knowledge" - is one of the latest entries into the search engine world trying to unseat Google.
One of the big differences between Cuil and other search engines is that this one was started and managed by former employees of Google, including Anna Patterson, Louis Monier, Russell Power, and Tom Costello. At the time of its launch in July 2008, Cuil claimed to have indexed almost 125 billion sites, dwarfing what people initially expected from the site.
However, initial reviews of the search engine were tepid at best, including some that were scathing, including this one from CNet. Time also delivered its initial verdict, calling Cuil "no threat to Google."
