It occurred to me last night that Sarah Palin is Jim Zorn without a headset. Both were obscure insignificants in the Great Northwest before Washington, um, mavericks and media paranoids put ‘em up for jobs that nobody else thought they were qualified for. She followed Bush II, he followed Gibbs II, etc.

With all the political news flying about this week, I’m afraid I almost lost sight of what is truly important - the beginning of football season! My Beloved Redskins kick off the 2008 NFL season tonight in New York against the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.

There’s a reason Dan Snyder’s worth a trillion dollars: He’s willing to try anything if there’s a chance he’ll earn a few bucks. Sure, there have been plenty of misses: Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Marty Schottenheimer, Norv Turner, Steve Spurrier, Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuleta, Six Flags, Cruise/Wagner Productions … well, you get the idea.

The problems remain extravagant for Dan Snyder’s multi-media extravaganza. Last night’s postgame show on the radio portion of Snyder’s Redskins Broadcasting Network was, much like the Skins/Jacksonville game, an unplanned carnival.

Sure as the sun will rise, question anything about Dan Snyder’s operation and the regular hangers-on at his message board will react as Scientologists once did whenever anybody questioned L. Ron Hubbard’s prophetability.

All along, when my home station, Sportstalk 980, was being boarded at swordpoint bought out by our Beloved Supreme Football Leader Dan Snyder, I was puzzled by one pretty key aspect of the deal. The Skinny: If I was a gambling man, I would have bet my house that a pitching matchup between Arizona’s Dan Haren and Jake Peavy of the Padres would have resulted in a 1-0 or 2-1 game. Thank goodness I’m not much of a gambler. Instead it turned into a wild affair that stood at 4-3 after one inning.
