20 August 2008 It’s no secret that I think Daniel Johnston is a great songwriter and an inspiring performer. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think he’s a legitimate genius. A tortured genius. I was finally able to see the documentary of his life, The Devil and Daniel Johnston: it was on TV tonight.

A long time ago an obscure "band" from New Jersey recorded a wonderful little collection of obscure songs from an even longer time ago (with a few of their own compositions thrown in for good measure). That band grew up to be Yo La Tengo.

I’ve never seen what all the fuss is about Daniel Johnston. Granted, I haven’t really made an effort to listen to the guy, apart from seeing the film “The Devil And Daniel Johnston” in which his music takes a backseat to his sad decline into serious mental illness.
