Diabetes mellitus
There are two common types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. In type 1, the body attacks its own pancreas and destroys the insulin producing cells. Insulin is the key that unlocks cells that glucose can enter. Without this key, glucose builds up, the blood turns acidic, and eventually causes death. In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes insulin resistant. One still produces insulin, but the keyhole is rusty and glucose can't efficiently get into the cell. Anyone can get either type of diabetes at any age, although people tend to get type 1 when they are young and type 2 when they are older.
Managing diabetes requires a combination that may include careful diets, exercise, medication, and insulin. Because there are so many variables, the blogosphere is full of people who discuss their experiences with diabetes from the perspective of a person with diabetes or a physician.
