Disaster

A disaster needn’t be federally declared as such by the President of the United States in order to fit the bill. A disaster is usually classified as an interruption of ordinary societal functioning and, as such, a threat to safety or security. Loss of life, injury, human suffering, and property damage are common elements of a large-scale disaster.

A disaster may be human-caused or due to the forces of nature. Some of these forces that can cause chaos and disruption include hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, floods, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Bloggers note that disaster planning includes obtaining and maintaining emergency supplies such as a 72 hour kit, which includes a first-aid kit, training for emergency response by learning CPR and rescue skills, and having in place an evacuation plan and a designated meeting point for health checks and accountability.
