Most people would rather sit at home and read the phone book than learn about the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and its mission. It has a reputation of being the agency where fun goes to die. However, recently the agency sat down and categorized its broad mission into five simple mantras:

1) To protect and improve the air so it's healthy to breathe, and risks to human health and the environment are reduced. This includes cutting down on CO2 emissions and other pollution.

2) Ensure drinking water is safe. This includes restoring and maintaining oceans, watersheds, and their aquatic ecosystems and providing a healthy habitat for fish, plants, and wildlife.

3) Preserve and restore the land by using innovative waste management practices and cleaning up contaminated properties. (This involves everything from general cleanup to proper chemical disposal.)

4) Protect, sustain, or restore the health of people, communities, and ecosystems using integrated and comprehensive approaches and partnerships (pellet mills, wind turbines, hybrid cars, etc.).

5) Improve environmental performance through compliance with environmental requirements, preventing pollution, and promoting environmental stewardship.
