Ferrari have announced a new sponsor for the 2008 season – Etihad Airways, the national airline for the United Arab Emirates. The Ferrari team already have strong links to this particular geographical region, having started to build a Ferrari theme park on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will operate a total of 728 weekly flights this summer compared to 494 in the same season last year, with the launch of new services to Beijing in China on 30 March and Calicut in India in June being the highlights of the summer schedule.

Etihad Airways plans to launch services to Almaty and Moscow this year, CEO James Hogan said yesterday. "Last year, we launched nine new routes and our network development will continue this year. We look forward to launching services to Beijing at the end of March - our first route in China," Hogan said at the Middle East Aviation Outlook Summit.

Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will start flying to Beijing on March 30, making it the third Gulf carrier coming to China. While not quite, as yet, competing with Emirates in the luxury stakes it is a very pleasant and well run airline.

I board the plane and try to get some sleep, I am in the very centre on an emergency exit row, so I don’t have anyone in front of me which is good but because a partition wall is there I am unable to stretch out fully which is frustrating and uncomfortable.

I got one of the special shuttles to the Singapore Airshow and arrived just in time to get a peek of the A380 gliding extraordinarily low and slow in the sky - from the bus window. Didn’t see any of the jets though! You can’t really tell from the pictures just how hot and bright it was.
