Farming
When The Agricultural Age was at its peak, farming changed the way societies and civilizations were created. It was the main reason humans went from being hunter-gatherers to organizing themselves into tribes and communities throughout the world.
When farmers became capable of producing food beyond the needs of their own families, others in their society were free to devote themselves to projects other than food acquisition. This was huge. It opened a whole range of interests and leisure activities that were heretofore unknown to man. Agriculture was a huge step forward for civilizations and societies as a whole.
Since then, The Agricultural Age has taken a bow on the world stage and largely given way to The Industrial Age; but farming still employs almost a third of the world’s workers in some form or another. The service sector just recently overtook farming as the largest employer of workers in the world.
Thomas Malthus once predicted that the Earth would not be able to support its growing population. But technologies such as the Green Revolution (pellet mills, pesticides, synthetic nitrogen, etc.) have allowed the world to produce a surplus of food.
