Hate Speech…once again

May 1, 2008 A double suicide attack struck a wedding convoy north-east of Baghdad today killing at least 30 and injuring 65. Police said the attacks occurred in the busy market town of Balad Ruz in the restive Diyala province. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the attack bore hallmarks associated with al Qaeda in Iraq.

A senior Taliban leader in Pakistan has warned local leading dailies against publishing “offensive” pictures of women. Popular Urdu dailies Aaj Kal and Express are among the newspapers that have been given a two-week deadline to stop publishing “offensive” pictures.

PESHAWAR: Activists of the Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) killed a man in Sarband Police Station jurisdiction on Saturday, police said. Sources within the police told Daily Times that Mukarram, son of Asadullah, was chastised by LI men for not offering Asr prayers and standing outside a mosque.

Dutch MP had proposed a series of debates surrounding the rather controversial topic: Islamisation of Netherlands. Well, the set of debates is apparently not going to happen. Seems like not many Muslims were going to attend the event.

Acres of print articles and blog entries have already been expended on the subject. Following the release of the notorious clip, a lot of I-may-not-like-what-you-say-but-I’ll-defend-to-the-death-your-right-to-say-it speeches have been flying around.

This, according to MENJ of Critical Thoughts, is the kind of “response” that is needed from Muslims, an intellectual response and not one based on emotion”. Ok, I applaud that call, instead of rioting in the streets and calling for the deaths of whoever has “insulted” Islam! But to call Schism an “intellectual response”?

As a follow up to his film, Fitna, Geert Wilders promised a series of follow up debates. But that plan is not going so well, the first debate has been cancelled as few Muslims agreed to join the debate.
