Queen Vargas and Adamsberg the First

    http://eurocrime.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ queen-vargas-and-adamsberg-first.html

Fiona Walker alerted me yesterday to the fact that amazon.co.uk are listing a new offering from Fred Vargas for February 2009 - The Chalk Circle Man. The lovely publicists at Harvill have advised me that this is in fact the first in the Adamsberg series (and I believe first published in French in 1996 as L'Homme aux Cercles Bleus).

Joe Muller: women invade the precincts of of a male preserve

Few people are as immersed in crime fiction as Joe Muller. He led the first panel discussion on local crime writing at the 2006 Cape Town Book Fair and he is due to do the honours again this year. He also acts as a consultant for Umuzi’s growing list of crime fiction. That’s aside from being an academic at UCT.

Fred Vargas ~ This Nghts Foul Work

    http://books.the-world-in-focus.com/ 2008/ 04/ 18/ fred-vargas-this-nghts-foul-w…

A corker of a crime novel. Fred Vargas unique style draws the reader into, an at times complex novel. There are lots of nice touches and interesting details in this novel, making it a real gem. If you enjoy crime novels, then this is a must for you. Synopsis On the outskirts of Paris, two men have been found with their throats cut.

    Slow authors and fast authors

    http://detectivesbeyondborders.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 03/ slow-authors-and-fast-aut…

I've recently finished one crime novel by the queen of slow buildups and started another by a writer who can't sit still. The slow writer is Fred Vargas, apt to open a novel with her protagonist stirred by a broken furnace to far-flung contemplation of Arctic winds.

Seeking Whom He May Devour Author: Fred Vargas ISBN: 9780743284028 Many of Vargas’ novels involve a myth or legend that comes up in modern times, which seems to be a really effective way of adding to the atmosphere regardless of whether the myth or legend turns out to be real.

Fred Vargas' physical and human geography

    http://detectivesbeyondborders.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 02/ fred-vargas-physical-and-…

I wrote a few months ago about Fred Vargas' keen and amused interest in the physical and human geography of her native country. My comment concerned Seeking Whom He May Devour and its road trip through southeastern France, but I could as easily have discussed Have Mercy On Us All, with its old Breton town crier in Paris.

Fred Vargas, Pars Vite et Reviens Tard (Have Mercy on Us All) (2001)

    http://smithereens.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 02/ 23/ fred-vargas-pars-vite-et-reviens…

I read that one almost entirely in the train going to Bordeaux and back. I had as much pleasure as discovering the previous one, Sans feu ni lieu. The fun of the discovery has just been replaced by the comforting pleasure to meet favorite characters again and see how they evolve, just like in a good
