Génocide
Jurist Raphael Lemkin coined the term genocide in 1944. The term is derived from the Greek “genos” meaning “kind or kin” and the suffix –cide, meaning to kill. Genocide is the systematic attempt to kill an entire population of people based on any number of perceived differences.
On December 9, 1948 the United Nations General Assembly, in light of the events of World War II and Lemkin’s research, adopted the United Nations Genocide Convention (UNGC).Genocide has increased with frequency since the end of WWII and has included the deaths of millions throughout the world. From the genocide in Darfur to the Armenian genocide, the brutality and wholesale destruction of human life poses a very serious threat to countless people throughout the world.
