Gossip Girl is a teen drama which premiered on September 18, 2007 in Canada on CTV before premiering in the U.S. a day later on The CW Television Network. It is based on a popular novel series of the same name promoted and marketed by Alloy Media, a leading producer of novels created for teenage and young adult audiences. The books were written by Cecily von Ziegesar.
The show revolves around the lives of socialite teenagers growing up on New York City's Upper East Side and their dealings with sex, drugs, jealousy, and other issues, while attending elite academic institutions. It's a Sex in the City of affluent youth. Each episode is narrated by the ever-present yet unseen narrator "Gossip Girl" (voiced by Kristen Bell), who runs a popular gossip commentary blog. The blog holds the attention of all major characters on the show as she brings up-to-the-minute talk about the opulent, elite Upper East Side social scene.
Gossip Girl stars an ensemble cast including Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies), Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen, and Jessica Szohr.
