Common uses for graphic design include ad work, product packaging, magazines and web sites. Graphic design split from fine art in 19th Century Europe. Piet Mondrian is credited as the father of graphic design. The advent and explosion of the internet has fostered new design requirements for the web design environment. Many graphic designers working on the internet are also photographers to facilitate web client needs.

Blogs on graphic design include trends, tips and techniques as well as listing of hot new graphic design sites. Award listings and resources are also common features of graphic design blogs.
