A brand new music service has just launched an open beta version: Guitarati. Yes, yet another new music service, but wait, this one has a totally different approach then existing music start-ups. Founder Sonal Pandey explained me in an email that the world of music discovery is dominated by tag clouds and rating systems, yet they don’t have anything to do with ‘feelings’ about music.

Sure, we've got iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, and even MySpace now chipping away at the lucrative digital music market. And while these behemoths quibble about presumably "important" selling points such as pricing, audio quality, and DRM-free content, until now another colorful issue has all but been ignored: who's looking after the synesthetics?

Lost in a world of tag clouds and numerical rankings, Guitarati set out to create a new way to help people find the music they want — with colors. Yes, you read that right. On its main page, Guitarati lays out a series of colorful dots. Clicking on one of these takes you to a selection of music based around that color.

So after 5 months of burning the midnight oil, with dreams and sleep in our eyes, we've launched perfectly as scheduled! It seemed like more than a coincidence that our launch date was Feb, the 14th - Valentine's Day as well as World Sound Healing Day. Music is about love and music heals too.
