Audiophile digital music store HDtracks to distribute high-resolution versions of Favored Nations albums with complete liner notes. HDtracks.com, the new digital music store offering high definition audio, announced a deal to sell works from renowned guitarist Steve Vai’s Favored Nations record label.

HDtracks is offering music downloads in no-compromise AIFF or FLAC formats. Currently they are CD quality; coming soon is 96/24 FLAC which is in theory better than CD, though some argue that the benefits are inaudible. All downloads are DRM-free. If you insist, you can have MP3 instead.

The music download revolution is passing audiophiles by. The quality of tracks offered by Apple's iTunes store leaves much to be desired for people who want to hear lossless music played over a high quality stereo system. For years, this has meant supporting the less-than-high-tech CD format, and ripping files to a computer's hard drive in the FLAC format.
