I’m being arbitrary once again with my definition of “independent.” In this category, I’m going to include a) indie or non-mainstream films that are not new releases, like the first two films below, and b) new release films that are truly small films, i.e., did not get a lot of studio publicity and a wide release, and probably were not financed by a major studio, even their speciality arms.

Hancock (2008) Hancock was good, but left a lot to be desired. The real reason I would say that it was good is because it was a little different from the rest of the super hero movies out there nowadays, but it is still a super hero movie unfortunately.

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later: the first mumblecore horror movie. Even as someone who has never really had much use for the mumblecore movement, this one has me intrigued, in large part because the two elements seem so incongruous.

Well, sort of. We sort of talked to some sort of famous people. Okay fine, we barely spoke to some people you have probably never heard of. In any case, it was a hoot. Last night we were invited to attend the IFC Downfront Party (look out for another post about IFC’s upcoming programming from recklesley) at Manahatta.

Baghead bills itself as being presented by "the Duplass Brothers." That's Jay Duplass, who a few years ago directed The Puffy Chair, from a script he co-wrote with brother Mark, who starred in it and produced it.

Hannah Takes the Stairs comes out on DVD today (see bloggy debate over the package’s generic rom-com design at FILMMAKER and Cinematical), which means that my Google Alert for “mumblecore” has been on fire for a number of days.
