How much of this story by the Socialist Worker is true, and how much is fudged? Did Iraqi workers really stop or did American workers in Iraq take an extra long break from the day's labor? Inquiring minds want to know. The LA Times doesn't mention any Iraqi worker stoppage. But please read on.

On May 1, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union violated its contract with the Pacific Maritime Association by staging a brief work-stoppage. One of the most inspiring things about yesterday's Mayday was a one day strike on the part of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) that shut down 29 ports on the west coast of the USA.

I participated in a protest against the Iraq War that was put together by the International Longshore and Warehouse Local 19. It’s funny, I was politically to the right of 99.9% of the people at this protest. There were a lot of communists, socialists and just plain old hippies, but we all oppose the war in Iraq.

…by closing down the docks to end the war. More than 25,000 West Coast International Longshore and Warehouse workers, including many hundred in Tacoma, are taking a day off work today in protest of the war in Iraq.
