Don’t Try to Change the World
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 05/ 04/ dont-try-to-change-the-world/(the following is the Graduation speech I intend to give one day, if I am ever deemed important or interesting enough to be asked to give one.) “Welcome to the world.” “New doors are opening for you.” “Go make a difference in the world around you.” Around the country, at this very moment, people like me are giving people like you advice on how to live your lives.

Premium Problem
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 30/ premium-problem/I recently saw a billboard for a local State Farm agent. It had a tag line: “Premium Service without Premium Price” Does that mean the insurance is free? Can I get the service without paying any premiums at all? Did someone in the marketing department just have a pun backfire? Technorati Tags: Ike Pigott, Occam’s RazR, insurance, marketing, State Farm ©2008 Occam's RazR.

Fuming Mad
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 25/ fuming-mad/Gas prices are up. Yes. But manufacturing a story about an increase in gasoline theft has me fuming at my former profession. This morning, it just happens to be focused on Good Morning America’s Bianna Golodryga and her producers. Lazy, lazy, lazy all the way around.

The End of Identity Politics
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 22/ the-end-of-identity-politics/(Note: the I don’t write about politics very often, for very good reasons. As you will find, however, this is not a purely political piece. Nor is it partisan.) On this particular day, with the most gorgeous weather imaginable for an Earth Day, the eyes of the nation will turn to Pennsylvania.

Save the Date
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 18/ save-the-date/South by Deep South is really happening. No joke. September 26-28 in Birmingham. We picked a date that did not conflict with either a Crimson Tide home game nor a NASCAR event. As it happens, we’ll also have the 10th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival going on, so it ought to be an amazing weekend all the way through.

Do Something
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 16/ do-something/I’m lucky, in that I don’t have a bad commute to the office and back. Of all the major thoroughfares leading into downtown Birmingham, coming in from the East on Interstate-20 is the best by far. Yet if the weather is bad, or I happen to hear about an accident on my route that might slow things down, I bail to the back roads.

10 Years Gone
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 08/ 10-years-gone/10 years ago this very morning, I was working in the news business. I was working the nightside reporting shift for the ABC affiliate here in Birmingham. I was fishing around for a story, to replace the one that I knew someone was going to do. A couple of days before, a local middle school student named Lindy collapsed and died while running track.

Awake and Aware
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 04/ 02/ awake-and-aware/I haven’t been sharing the ups and downs of my cousin Billy, not because there haven’t been, but because they haven’t been earthshaking in either direction. However, the overall trend seemed to be headed downhill. Until this morning.

Making Pearls
http://occamsrazr.com/ 2008/ 03/ 31/ making-pearls/In the last couple of years with the Red Cross, I have been involved in some of the strangest crisis communications challenges you can imagine. Notice, I didn’t say “most intense” or “most difficult” or even “most noteworthy.” In most of these cases, we’re talking about a local chapter and its relationship to its community.
