The CageBlogger is back. He was the one listening to and blogging about all of the recorded works of John Cage. Me, I'm good for about ten tracks by a composer and I feel like I need to move on, for the day anyway.

Robert Rauschenberg Died Last Night May 13, 2008 Robert Rauschenberg, one of America’s most famous contemporary artists, died of heart failure Monday night in Florida. Perhaps best known for his mixed media assemblages in the 1950s, which he called “Combines“, Rauschenberg rejected traditional art disciplines.

Well, Robert Rauschenberg is dead. Along with John Cage, a favorite. I saw Bed once, up close, I think, and was moved.

Thinking about the idea of music histories is a daunting one. Music generally has had a recorded history for an incredibly long time. However, I find that much of the recorded history of music ignores certain genres, and mainly focuses on the most popular genres and their history.

Hear that? That is the sound of countless Botox-enhanced faces within the film industry simultaneously stretching to a smile after the opening weekend of ‘Iron Man.’ As everything else in these current economically shaky times, the film industry hobbled into 2008, weakened by a writers strike and sagging returns.

London was in glorious weather this weekend; and I was in (mostly) glorious theatre for much of it. Even the Barbican Centre becomes nearly palatable in the good weather: though the lakeside terrace may be an entirely man-made oasis in the midst of the bleakly (dys)functional urban cityscape it is part of, but at least you get the illusion of nature.

In the comments, John Bickerton of Unique Tracks has pointed out a better performance of Cage's Cartridge Music. Although I am quite judgmental about what works are good and what ones are not, I'm not one to have strong preferences in performances of those works.
