John McCain
John McCain was born on August 29th, 1936 on the Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone of Panama. He was born into a Naval family and continued that tradition when he joined the Navy in 1954 and served for almost three decades. During his time, he was captured and held by his captors as a POW for nearly six years before being released in 1973. He eventually retired from the Navy in 1981.
Soon after finishing his Naval career, John McCain moved to Arizona and quickly became a congressman there in 1982. By 1987, he was an Arizona senator, a position he has held for over 20 years. In 2000, McCain made an initial run at the presidency, but did not garner the Republican nomination.
However, McCain was not done with attempting to be the head man of the U.S.A. and again ran in 2008. This time, he secured the Republican Party's nomination, running against Illinois senator Barack Obama. On November 4th, Obama, along with running mate Joe Biden, soundly defeated McCain and his vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, to become the nation's 44th president.
