Katy Perry

Katy Perry is an American singer/songwriter out of Santa Barbara County, California. Born on October 25, 1984, Perry's rise to fame came as a result of her hit single "I Kissed a Girl." The song became a worldwide hit, knocking down the number one spot in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.

Perry's first album was a significant departure from what would become her later work. In 2001, Katy Hudson was released. It was a Christian gospel music album and featured Perry under the name of Katy Hudson belting out praise and worship songs. She co-wrote many of the songs from the record, which was released on Red Hill records.

After changing her name to Katy Perry to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson, Perry changed direction with her music and became more pop-oriented. She was named "one to watch" by Blender magazine and soon started to build a buzz due to songs she posted on her MySpace page.

Her mainstream debut album, One of the Boys, was released in 2008. The single "I Kissed a Girl" turned heads for its brazen teasing of bisexuality, while Perry's debut single from the record, a song called "Ur So Gay," produced confusion and criticism.

Katy Perry will likely continue to face controversy and criticism in her career as it continues, following in the footsteps of greats like Madonna. Perry certainly is "one to watch."
