Madonna

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan in 1958. She goes by just Madonna and is one of the most recognized female performers in the world. In 1977, she left the University of Michigan to pursue a music and dance career in New York City. In 1982, her first single, "Everybody" was a club hit. She has released a dozen albums, including Like a Prayer, Like a Virgin, True Blue, Erotica, and Ray of Light.

Not content with being one of the top selling female musicians of all time, Madonna turned her attention to films. Her most notable turn was in the title role of Evita, which won her a Golden Globe. Other films include Who's That Girl, Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own, and Body of Evidence.

Madonna is no stranger to controversy. Her "Like a Prayer" music video outraged religious groups with its depiction of flaming crosses. Music videos for "Justify My Love" and "Erotica" were banned from MTV for being too sexually explicit, and "What It Feels Like (For A Girl)" for being too violent.

Madonna has been married twice: to actor Sean Penn, and to director Guy Ritchie. She has three children: Lourdes (from Carlos Leon), Rocco (from Ritchie), and David (adopted from Malawi). She is a devotee of Kabbalah and writes a series of children's books.
