Magazine

A magazine is a publication that is published on a regular basis. Prior to the popularization of the Internet, most magazines were published in print form, with new issues published as often as a few times a month to as little as once a year. Unlike daily newspapers, the  more forgiving editorial deadlines usually resulted in more editorial depth to help compensate for their lesser timeliness compared to other media. In addition to being published in print, online, or some combination of the two, magazines have also been distributed via CD or BBS with limited success.

There are three types of magazines: consumer (which targets a general interest audience like National Geographic), trade (targets an industry-specific audience like Nation's Restaurant News), and scholarly/literary (targets an academic audience, like the Journal of Geophysical Research). Unlike commercial magazines, academic journals are supported by the non-profit organizations that run them, or they may be funded mostly by donations.

As more magazines began to be published online, the print industry began to question how it could use online versions of its magazines to attract paid subscribers with such value-added services as members-only perks and forums. Others sought to monetize their online editions by accepting advertising and/or installing fee-based gateways to some (or all) of their content. Some publications such as Radar discontinued their print magazines entirely, instead focusing exclusively on their online editions. A few publications like Paste Magazine have experimented with a pay what you like subscription model.
