Marathon

A marathon is a footrace wherein the competitors log a distance of a whopping 26 7/32 miles. Each of the participants wears on their “jersey” a number they can be identified by, and they plod along at a pace they set themselves, trying either to set a personal best, simply finish the race, or a select few even seeking to set a new world record. The top 10 all-time best recorded times all come from participants hailing from a handful of African countries.

Marathon runners train hard, running many miles daily beginning long beforehand in preparation for the big event. Marathon runners are known for their consistency, discipline, and strength of character. There is no such thing as a lazy marathon runner; if there ever was, his species has been driven into extinction almost before the dawn of time.

A marathon may have thousands upon thousands of participants, and can be run on a mostly flat surface or have trails and steep grades. Rising in popularity are half marathons, along with other races like 5ks and 10ks that offer versatility on a more local scale.
