In news that is bound to annoy the MX-5/Roadster/Miata fans among you, Mazda has officially scotched rumours that a harder-core, turbocharged version of the NC MX-5 is on its way. The reason? Apparently the 2.3-litre turbo MZR inline-four from the Mazdaspeed 3 (currently the fastest Mazda on sale today) just plain doesn't fit within the confines of the NC's engine bay.

So says Autoblog. According to Mazda’s PR man Jeremy Barnes, the 2.3-liter direct injected turbo that kicks mucho booty in various states of tune under the hoods of the CX-7, Mazdaspeed 3 and Mazdaspeed 6 simply will not fit in the diminutive Miata.

Autoblog reported this weekend Mazda's put the kibosh on rumors of a Mazdaspeed version of the MX-5. Speculation was rampant the turbo 2.3-liter Mazdaspeed3 engine would end up under the hood of the MX-5, but apparently the fuel pump design makes the swap from transverse to longitudinal mounting prohibitively expensive.
