The Middle East is a loosely defined area that spans southwestern Asia, western Asia, and northeastern Africa. The most current CIA map of the area, as of April 2009, can be found here.
The history of the Middle East is diverse, depending on the country or territory. A good beginning source is the CIA World Fact Book.
The BBC has ongoing coverage of The Middle East. Major news magazines carry blogs about The Middle East, as do many major newspapers. Universities and colleges are a good source for comprehensive information, and there are a lot of personal blogs by people from The Middle East, Rantings of a Sand Monkey is one example.
