India’s coastal city of Mumbai has long been known as the commercial, shipping, and financial center of India. But more recently, the city has entered a global stage thanks to an increase of corporate outsourcing from industrialized countries and a worldwide increase in demand for Indian movies and pop culture (Mumbai is lovingly nicknamed Bollywood).

The notoriety that Mumbai receives on the world stage has also made it desirable as a target of terrorist attacks, like those in 2008 that left many dead and countless more injured. These attacks could be attributed to the strain that economic disparity and religious radicalism puts on nations or the continuing poor relations between India and Pakistan. Despite all the hardships, Mumbai continues to be a bastion of capitalism in the developing world.
