The housing stimulus package is a milestone for first time homebuyers that will help provide a much needed extra boost to the housing industry in the form of a tax credit, as well as much-needed measures that will improve mortgage liquidity, foster refinancing of troubled loans, and expand the supply of affordable rental housing.

We’ll be signing off today for the holiday weekend, but before we do that, I want to point out a couple of interesting green building statistics: one group collected by NAHB and the other which was mentioned during yesterday’s Green Building Initiative webinar discussing insurance and surety issues for green construction projects.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has opened the online nomination process for its annual Pillars of the Industry awards program, which recognizes the best work in the nation’s multifamily housing industry.

Sales of newly built single-family homes rose 2.4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 515,000 units in July, the Commerce Department reported today. The report also indicated continuing contraction in the number of new-homes for sale as builders keep a tight rein on inventories to help restore better balance between market supply and demand.

Anticipating positive impacts of newly enacted housing stimulus legislation, single-family home builders registered some improvement in their outlook for home sales in the next six months, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) for August, released yesterday.

Here’s the housing news of the day from Reuters and Data Quick.  Southern California home sales posted a year-over-year gain in seven of the eight counties making up the region. The only county that showed a loss of sales was Los Angeles in which sales were down 3.2%.

The NAHB reports that builder confidence was at 16 in August, unchanged from July. Usually housing bottoms look like a "V"; this one will probably look more like an "L". (this refers to activity like starts and sales, but will probably also be apparent in the confidence survey).
