Notes from Jeogeot: Newbie Salsa and Q&A, 2008/05/03

    http://blog.nci-sl.org/ ?p=100

For those that are wondering, Jeogeot is the name of the Southern continent. This is a bit of a departure for me, given that I’m more used to simply filling in a notecard as an event report. So, bear with me.. fasten your seatbelts, extinguish all smoking materials, and be sure your seat is in the upright position.

Tranche in the news: More wins for Open Data

Proteome Commons Tranche is one of the cooler resources on the web. Ever since I met Jayson Falkner, I have liked their approach to open data, and their early support for CC0. Looks like Tranche has hit the big time with the announcement that the resource has been chosen to host all mouse model proteomics data collected by the National Cancer Insititute.

    Choosing a NCI-designated Cancer Center

When I was first diagnosed, I looked up the website for Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center because I thought that in the New York area, this facility would be the gold standard. They have a great page on their site about Making Care Choices; one call to Sloan and I received this life-saving advice: get myself to the nearest National Cancer Institute designated cancer center.

Tip of the Week: Translating Gene IDs with MatchMiner

    http://www.openhelix.com/ blog/ ?p=295

As we were creating a tutorial on the GoMiner resource from the Genomics and Bioinformatics group at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), we found another handy NCI tool named the MatchMiner.  MatchMiner translates one type of gene ID into another type - essentially the genetic equivalent of Swahili-to-German translating software.

Op-Ed Writers Say Iraq War Taking Away Cancer Funding

    http://onthehillblog.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 04/ op-ed-writers-say-iraq-war-taking-a…

Many scientists believe that "the cost of the Iraq war is largely responsible for a drop in real dollars for cancer research, and private organizations, though critical, are a pale substitute for the power of the federal government," according to a Clinton-era White House aide and a cancer lab director.
