There’s a New Predator in Town Although I can’t imagine such a thing would exist, it has recently come to my attention that there are websites out here that not only encourage depressed people to take their own lives but they also provide a reference on how-to.

I don’t know if my non-Canadian blog friends (HI EVERYONE, BY THE WAY) have heard about Nadia Kajouji, an 18-year old university student here in the city, who died as a result of drowning in April.  It wasn’t an accident; there was no foul play involved.  She did it to herself… and her disappearance and subsequent death shocked a city.

Since I am American, I do not know the health privacy laws of Canada. However, I do know that once a person turns 18, there is no legal obligation for a doctor to reveal or release one's medical records, or even to inform parents or family that their patient has a serious health problem and needs support and additional treatment.

The criticism being levelled at Carleton university for not informing Nadia Kajouji’s parents of her depression is unreasonable. Though her family’s anger is understandable and they are not expected to be calm at such a time, dance with us into the minefield and ask: are they upset with the right people?

After announcing a $50,000 cash reward to those who could provide leads on their missing daughter, the parents of 18-year-old Carleton University student Nadia Kajouji is meeting a Toronto private investigator to help them look for her. Nadia, who has been missing for the past two weeks, was last seen leaving her campus dormitory on March 9 at 11:30 p.m.
