Nintendo wii

The Nintendo Wii was launched in 2006 as the successor to (and replacement for, as it plays all its games) the GameCube.  Rather than take the high road of costly development, top-of-the-line specs, and cutting-edge sound and graphics, Nintendo's diminutive Wii is only moderately more powerful than its predecessor.

The Wii became a worldwide phenomenon almost overnight.  Two and a half years into its lifespan, it is still almost continually sold out, both at retail and online.  Two of the biggest keys to the system's success and appeal to the masses are its relatively low price ($250 at launch, compared to the $400-600 price points of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) and intuitive, motion-sensing controls that make games very natural for gamers and nongamers alike to get the hang of.

The underdog has become a huge success for the company, and has become as popular among the hardcore (the Zelda, Mario, and Metroid devout) as it is among their parents and grandparents, if not more so for the latter.  Some take this casual gaming phenomenon as a slight against serious gamers, a diluting of the industry, while others embrace the refreshing take on electronic entertainment and interactivity within a medium.
