Olana day in the valley Magnet #155 - Olana stenciled panel Frederic Church was one of the most important landscape artists in America in the 19th century, and he made his home in New York's Hudson Valley. That home is the beautiful Olana, designed by Robert Morris Hunt, the same guy who did a few of the houses up in Newport, RI.

I had a meeting up at Olana today, home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Church. Although I didn’t have time to pull out all my gear to paint, I couldn’t resist at least doing a sketch while I was there. I saw a nice bench under a tree next to the mansion, so I pulled out my sketchbook, fountain pen, and watercolors, and took advantage of the shady spot while sketching.

8.5"x11" - watercolor - $100. This vista from one of the high trails at Olana overlooks the Hudson River and Catskill mountains beyond. The views are made famous by the Hudson River School painters. I am fortunate to live close by and often come here to paint the landscape, the views and the sunsets and moon rises.
