Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has emerged as a popular technology for modern voice communications. Many organizations have replaced their analog or proprietary digital telephone systems with VoIP-based solutions. This allows the consolidation of telephone services into an existing IP infrastructure.

iPass (News - Alert) today announced that Sony Ericsson is rolling out its “Mobile Office” to a global remote workforce that spans Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, India, Japan, China and the United States. iPass officials say that Mobile Office unifies mobility management over any Internet connection.

Asterisk is well-known, but the open-source IP PBX FreeSwitch is winning favor in some circles, says ZDNet's Dave Greenfield. FreeSwitch gets kudos for cleaner code and better implementation of some types of features. Expected to be released this week, Version 1.0.1 improves the code stability and adds both automatic speech recognition and text to speech to the code.

The much sought after Asterisk on Amazon EC2 How-to Guide is almost complete! The instructions are done and now all that’s left is the copy! I’m shooting for an Friday official release on July 16th of the guide (a beta version will be available by the weekend or sooner for those who care to proofread, test, etc.) and I look forward to you downloading and reading it for your pleasure.

Telepresence seems to have come out of nowhere and taken the market by storm. Couple this innovation with UC and you have disparate solutions which work very well with one another. In fact, the European market for open source VoIP is growing 70 percent annually, according to one market researcher.

Greg Galitzine broke the news regarding the new Digium Switchvox AA300, a new appliance dedicated to companies with about 150 users. The box also supports 45 simultaneous calls, 10 recorded and 15 simultaneous conference calls.
