Orbitz Worldwide, the parent company of Orbitz.com, was formed in 2000 and is currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Orbitz promotes itself as a "leading global online travel company that uses innovative technology to enable leisure and business travelers to research, plan, and book a broad range of travel products."
Orbitz was the airline industry's first attempt at getting back direct sales of tickets through their own conglomerated site. By doing this instead of having users use sites such as Travelocity to book their flights, the airlines are able to keep all of the money to themselves rather than share some of the profits with these online travel agencies.
Orbitz is well known for using former game show host Wink Martindale in commercials touting its services. Orbitz also hosts sites for accessing their services by mobile phone and for playing games.
