In the US, the title physician is widely used in the newer, broader sense and applies to any person holding the degrees of doctor of medicine (MD) and doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), but is often referred to simply as a Doctor. The American Medical Association uses the term physician to describe all its members. For example, osteopaths are recognized as physicians and podiatrists with a doctor of podiatric medicine degree are referred to as podiatric physicians.

However, outside of the US the term physician is still used in its older, narrow sense to describe a specialist in internal medicine - that is a specialist in treatment by drugs or medications - while a surgeon would be a specialist in surgical procedures. It takes years of training and experience to become a physician. Such physicians are highly respected and are often members or “fellows” of professional bodies like the Royal College of Physicians in the UK.

A physician is another name for a doctor although it does have 2 meanings as you will see below.
