Pagan

The term pagan comes from the Latin word paganus, meaning country dweller. It is a rather recent word, formed in the pre-Christian Europe by Christians to describe those who weren't Christians. The pagans lived most often on the countryside, while the first Christians lived in cities; hence the expression pagan.

The word pagan has varied meanings, and it is most often used by believers in monotheistic religions, namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This definition includes most practitioners of polytheistic and indigenous religions, and also neo-paganism.

Nowadays the word pagan is no longer considered a pejorative term, and people are actually proud to call themselves pagans.
