Party

A party is a gathering of people assembled to socialize and enjoy time together. Some reasons people hold parties are to celebrate a birthday, wedding, anniversary, holiday, sports event, business promotion, baby shower, or the purchase of a new home. In the case of outdoor cookouts, BBQs, potlucks, pool parties, and picnics, no official reason for holding a party may be necessary beyond the food served or the planned activites. Common elements of a party may include food, music, alcohol, conversation, games, and dancing.

Depending on the occasion, the level of formality, and the culinary skill of the host of the event, food served at a party may be quite elaborate, involving the preparation of a wide variety of gourmet meals for the guests to enjoy. In the case of more informal parties, sometimes the complexity of the food is considered to be of lesser importance. In those cases, food may be limited to some variation of chips and dip, simple finger foods, or delivered food (such as Chinese food, sub sandwiches, or pizza). In addition to parties held in someone's home, popular venues for parties include rented halls, restaurants, and bars. Work related parties are often held at one's place of business (such as a grand opening or retirement party).
