Patch

A patch may refer to fabric used to repair a hole, a rubber piece used to repair a tire or an embroidery element to add aesthetic or decorative value to clothing, outerwear or in the case of scouts, a badge sash.

Embroidered patches are a design made by decorative threads on a firm backing that can be applied by adhesive, heat activated adhesive or sewn on. Rayon and polyester have historically been the materials used in patch manufacturing but cotton and hemp can also be used. Three dimensional textures, dye sublimation and weaving techniques have created more intricate patches with special effects.

The patch has many other definitions. For example, thousands of websites and blogs refer to code that upgrades or fixes pre-distributed software as a patch; the cords used to connect a guitar to an amplifier are called patch cords. Smoking cessation blogs, referring to adhesive nicotine bandages that are placed on the skin, commonly referred to it as "the patch".
