Pearl Jam

Tag details

Pearl Jam burst onto the scene in 1991 as part of the Seattle "grunge" revolution with their debut album Ten.  Formed in Seattle by former members of the band Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam's first lineup included lead singer Eddie Vedder, guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Dave Krusen.  In addition to Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese, and ex-Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Jack Irons have also drummed for the band.  Since 1998, former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron has filled that role.

The band followed up Ten with Vs. in 1993 and Vitalogy in 1994.  At the height of their success, they took on ticketing giant Ticketmaster, accusing them of acting as a monopoly.  This would not be the band's last foray into the world of activism.  They would participate in the 2004 Vote For Change tour, a tour aimed at galvanizing support to oust U.S. President George W. Bush in favor of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (Bush defeated Kerry in the '04 election).

When the grunge movement died out, Pearl Jam continued to make records and tour.  Their commercial successes were fewer than early in their career, but the loyal following they built largely remained in tact.  The band's subsequent studio albums included No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, and Pearl Jam.  They also released a greatest hits package rearviewmirror and a B-sides compilation Lost Dogs

Im playing a request from the archives today, in fact this is an obscure song that was given to fans in 1993 as the fan club holiday vinyl gift.  Yes, Pearl Jam gives away a 45 record to everyone in the fan club for a Christmas gift!  They are always cool, usually with an odd song or rare performance.  The art work ...

I’m not sure why the end of the noughties should necessarily lead to any kind of retrospective of the nineties, but it has.  I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that I just feel it’s way too early for me to figure out what I make of the noughties. So, given that it must be about time for the nineties ...

I’m visiting Auckland for the Pearl Jam concert. It was the best concert I’ve been too. PJ played for two and a half hours, on top of stunning performances with Liam Finn, Ben Harper and Neil Finn. I got a bit stomped in the mosh pit. Man I hate those big smelly dudes that push their way to the front. Even so I ...

As painful as it is to call attention to the “musical group” the Clipse, I am professionally obligated to call MTV out for their rudderless censorship policy. In the most recent Clipse video called “ Popular Demand ,” viewers may be confused by what appears to be performers rapping in front of a blank ...

2009 was such a good year for music. Here’s the site’s top 25 songs of the year. They be friggity fresh, and no, I am not stupid enough to take anything away from Lady Gaga. But still, it was Metric’s year as far as I’m concerned. 1. “Sick Muse” – Metric 2. “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga 3. “Got ...

Yesterdays rant about the movie Singles, the truly amazing music that was produced in the early 1990s, and the comparative state of the music industry today, such as it is, got me thinking. And then it got me listening. And I noticed that the majority of my favorites from my iPod selection were put out [...]

Its time to talk about Backspacer . It’s been almost two months since it was released and I’m not lying when I say it’s the only album I have listened to in that time. I don’t have a radio in my car so this is entirely plausible. Here’s the thing about this album. You won’t like it. You’ll listen ...
