The News and Observer published a story this morning informing the masses that the long awaited trial of Carolina Head Coach Peter Laviolette, begins next week. The prosecuting attorney will be Jim Rutherford while Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos will acting as the judge, jury, and possible executioner.

Do you get the feeling that perhaps Montreal General Manager Bob Gainey traded away his team’s best chance at winning the Stanley Cup for a measly 2nd round draft pick? That is what probably happened when he decided to trade away ex-Canadiens goalie Cristobal Huet to Washington for a 2nd round pick.

In a recent report written by beat writer Luke DeCock, the sometimes “absentee” owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, Mr. Peter Karmanos has promised to be more active in the running of his NHL franchise this coming year. Karmanos is reportedly taking a lesser role at Compuware, his number one business interest and will have more time to devote to managing the Canes.

During the first week of April after the Carolina Hurricanes were eliminated from the playoffs, General Manager Jim Rutherford had a press conference in which he indicated that he was not going to meet with Hurricanes Coach, Peter Laviolette until after “emotions had settled down”, because he didn’t want to do anything rash without giving it thought.

One player who undoubtedly will be returning next year for the Carolina Hurricanes is Sergei Samsonov. Carolina General Manager, Jim Rutherford wasted no time in re-signing the talented and skilled Russian winger who scored 32 points in 38 games after he was picked up off waivers by the Canes about half way through last year.

The Carolina Hurricanes are back in the news, but certainly not in the way that fans would like them to be. General Manager Jim Rutherford is telling anyone who will listen that he is far from happy with his 2006 Stanley Cup winning coach, Peter Laviolette.

The Carolina Hurricanes might have had a couple of days off recently between games, but they have been very busy doing a variety of things on and off the ice during that time frame. I’m going to try to give a little bit of information on several news items and interviews, just in case you might have missed anything.

Last night’s skills competition wasn’t the most exciting that I have ever seen, but it was pretty entertaining. Eric Staal certainly didn’t embarrass himself as he went 4 for 6 in the shot accuracy competition and hit the post on his shootout attempt.

Last night I was watching the news and there was a report on WRAL about how the Hurricanes, (Gale Force Holdings), were trying to re-negotiate their lease for the RBC Center with the Centennial Authority. Presently the lease is good until the year 2019, but the Canes are asking that the rent be lowered from 3 million to 2 million per year in exchange for adding 5 years on the lease.

I have received a couple of emails asking me for my opinion about the rumors concerning the possibility that Jim Rutherford might leave Carolina to be General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. While the blog mentioned this a bit last week, I didn’t really go into any detail.
