The only things I have ever done anything to are pewter relics and I put a coat of a good quality clear finger nail polish on them. Ive got buttons and coins that I dug in the late 60s that look the same as the day I cleaned them and Ive never done anything to them.2 hours ago -

As far as metal the only thing I would worry about keeping moist would be pewter as it will dry up and crack. Once I get a pewter relic home and get it cleaned I coat it with a good quality clear fingernail polish. Other people might have other and better ideas though2 hours ago -
