Psoriasis

It is thought that psoriasis starts when the immune system is low. We all have T cells (a type of white blood cell) which usually protect us from infection and disease by attacking bacteria. With psoriasis, the T cells attack the skin cells instead. The body responds by producing more skin cells and it is this rapid production of new skin cells which causes an accumulation of both dead cells and live cells in visible layers. A normal skin cell matures in 21 to 28 days but a psoriasis cell takes only 2 to 3 days. The end result is raised red patches of skin covered with silvery scales. The skin can be itchy and may crack and bleed and in severe cases, the pain and discomfort can affect sleep and every day tasks may become difficult to complete.

Psoriasis is a chronic lifelong (and often genetic) condition but psoriasis treatments are available to control the symptoms.
